PROJECT

East Melbourne Apartment Escape

Scope

Kitchen Redesign
Interior Colour Scheme
Finishes & Material Selection - stone, wood floor, paint etc.

Overlooking the mighty MCG, this East Melbourne 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom apartment is where my Client escapes to for the comfort of a home away from home.

The existing kitchen was tired, cracked marble benchtops, stone floor stained within a carpet surround, appliances dated and the bookend kitchen cabinetry made the apartment feel cramped. The constraints for the kitchen design were worked around the plumbing anchoring the sink position and retaining the variable bulkheads housing sprinklers and the AC system. The new design visually balances the sweeping view of the majestic MCG, with a harmony of colour and materials answering the Clients brief.

The new design connected the galley bench tops by a tall shallow pantry transforming the kitchen to a U-shape that cleared the plumbing point for the sink. The coffee machine is in close proximity to the sink and filtered water tap. The appliance openings and shelf displays were designed to align with the bulkhead and light placement cleared the AC and sprinkler pipes.  The benchtops overhang for casual bar seating as requested by the Client. The sink side of the kitchen supports preparation and serving and the cooktop is the cooking side. Cabinetry heights and cuts of stone slabs took into consideration the size of the lift and access into the apartment.

Accessible storage with variable drawer depths, Orgaline inserts, built in recycle bin, tea towel rail chemical store and shallow pantry provide easy retrieval and organisation. The microwave is set under the benchtop as it is only used to heat wheat packs. Pyrolytic oven and induction cooktop both chosen for easy clean function and a quality cooking experience. The fridge, dishwasher and rangehood are integrated in the design and material scheme to recede.

A mix of individually switched downlights and LED lights on dimmers provide mood options and invite in light on dull days.

The foundation for the visual flow is achieve with three colors and materials.

New engineered oak timber flooring throughout the kitchen, meals and living expands and links the apartment. Resilient Sensa stone quartzite slabs chosen for stain resistant protection and the polished finish on the splashback stone reflects the mighty MCG as the light moves around the apartment. Cabinetry in Wilsonart shadow laminate traceless finish minimises cleaning of finger prints and creates harmony between the timber and stone.

From the minute you enter the apartment the kitchen opens up to the majestic views of the MCG and supports work, life, play and of course cooking.
